TXST SoTDF presents HEDDA GABLER

No character is purely villain or victim; each navigates societal expectations in their own way, making the drama both unsettling and deeply human.

Texas State University’s School of Theatre, Dance, and Film (SoTDF) presents Hedda Gabler, running March 5-8 and March 11-13, 2026, in the PSHF Studio Theatre.

Henrik Ibsen’s riveting drama of ambition, power, and consequence receives a fresh take through Patrick Marber’s bold contemporary version, directed by Megan Codling.

Newlyweds George and Hedda Tesman (nee. Gabler) find their fresh start suffocating. Surrounded by ambition, Hedda longs for meaning and control. As she manipulates those around her in pursuit of influence, relationships crack, and consequences quickly escalate.

Hedda Gabler, invites audiences to experience Ibsen’s masterpiece as a living, urgent story, one that asks what happens when desire collides with limitation, and what it costs to seek power in a world that offers security but not freedom. No character is purely villain or victim; each navigates societal expectations in their own way, making the drama both unsettling and deeply human.

The world of Hedda Gabler unfolds within an intimate group: George Tesman (Andrew Bennett), Hedda Tesman (Monica Louise Weaver), Aunt Juliana (Lilli Shank), Mrs. Elvsted (Gwendolyn Kapusinski), Judge Brack (Cleofas Soto V), Eilert Løvborg (Parker Manriquez), Berte (Vivienne West), and the Little Girl (Maddee Young). Their tightly woven household is marked by ambition, loyalty, desire, and power, culminating in devastating consequences.

The Hedda Gabler, production team showcases the creativity and technical skill of Michelle Ney (Scenic Designer), Theo Ontiueros-Dravigne (Costume Designer), Collin Hall (Lighting Designer), Katie Bagley (Sound Designer), Colin Shay (Technical Director), Morgan Smithwick (Dramaturge), and Cameron Hamilton (Production Stage Manager), whose collaborative work brings this contemporary staging to life in the PSHF Studio Theatre.

In conjunction with the production’s run and International Women’s Day, the theatre-honors fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega (APO), will host a donation drive for the Hays-Caldwell Women's Center. Donations can include household goods, clothing, hygiene products, baby items, and food. APO will have donation bins available in the lobby for those who wish to contribute.
